The Goat And The Coffee Berries

You may ask why we are called, The Giddy Goat Coffee Shop, in today's blog, we're going to take a trip back in time to explore the origins of the legend of coffee and the goat's role in it.

According to the legend, coffee was first discovered by a goat herder named Kaldi in Ethiopia in the 9th century. Kaldi noticed that his goats became particularly lively and energetic after eating the berries from a certain tree, and he decided to try them himself.

To his surprise, Kaldi found that the berries had a similar effect on him, and he soon shared them with the local monks. They too discovered the stimulating effects of the berries, and word soon spread throughout the region.

The story of Kaldi and his goats has become a popular legend in coffee culture, and it's easy to see why. The idea of a curious goat stumbling upon a discovery that would eventually lead to one of the world's most beloved beverages is both charming and fascinating.

At our café, we like to honour the role that goats played in the discovery of coffee in our name and logo. Plus there really are goats nearby too, just ask the team in the coffee shop and they will point you in the right direction. We believe that it's important to pay homage to the humble beginnings of this beloved beverage, and we're proud to do so in our own small way.

So come on in, grab a cup of coffee, and raise a toast to Kaldi and his goats!
